MMARated.com’s Cultural & Media Rankings – 04/08/08

Welcome to week one of the MMARated.com’s cultural and media rankings. Each week we’ll weigh in on who’s hot and who’s not in the world of mixed martial arts. Take a look…

MMARATED CULTURAL RANKINGS – 04/08/08

  MOMENTUM THOUGHTS
1. Fedor Emelianenko DOWN One fight in the last twelve months and he’s still the most coveted free agent in the sport. Don’t think he’s worth two million dollars a fight, though.
Update: Sherdog.com reports Fedor will be facing Tim Syliva in July.
2. Cung Le DOWN Just over a week removed from his spectacular victory over Frank Shamrock. He still deserves a little more time to boast.
3. TUF 7 UP Even if all the fights are boring this edition of TUF is looking like it will be the most entertaining yet.
4. Montreal UP The MMA world will be focused on Montreal in eleven days and it’s time for Canada to prove how much they love and respect this sport.
5. Kenny Florian STATUS QUO The man just keeps finishing fights.
6. ShoXC UP Forget the name, if you want to see exciting, up-and-coming fighters this is the show to watch.
7. Wagnney Fabiano UP Is he the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world? Not yet…

MMARated.com: Cung Le Reflects On Saturday Night

img_8357-le-vs-shamrock-01.jpgYou’ll have to forgive Cung Le if he sounds a little tired during our interview. It’s tough being the new king of San Jose especially after earning that moniker following a grueling three round war against the likes of Frank Shamrock. Le impressed the entire MMA world this past Saturday night when he dominated Shamrock for fifteen minutes and eventually captured the Strikeforce middleweight crown after Shamrock broke his right forearm and was unable to continue fighting.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Le just days after the victory and among the topics we spoke about included:

* Has the reality of beating Frank Shamrock finally sunk in?

* Did he expect the fight to unfold as it did

* His thoughts on Frank Shamrock’s trash-talking tactics before and during the fight

* His game plan going into the bout

* Whether he knew he had broken Shamrock’s arm

* His thoughts on the end of the third round

* When he would like to fight next

* His current contract situation with Strikeforce

A Long Time Coming

i.jpgThe last time the UFC held an event in Colorado was on December 16, 1995, and while it took over twelve years to return they definitely made up for lost time with an explosive Ultimate Fight Night card. Stunning KOs, surprising finishes and a hot crowd made for another exciting night of fights courtesy of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Let’s take a look at the main storylines coming out of the show:

The Kenny Florian train continues to roll since his loss to Sean Sherk in October 2006 with a victory over Joe Lauzon. A great showing by Lauzon fighting in his first UFC main event but one has to wonder what kind of damage that cut on the top of his head did to his psyhce. I’m guessing not much since he had plenty of opportunities to finish Florian in the first round. J-Lau has nothing to be ashamed of as I think this fight solidifies the fact that his days of fighting on the untelevised fights are over for good.

So, Houston Alexander may not be the real deal after all. Who would have thunk it? Now, it’s one thing to get exposed on the ground by a superior BJJ fighter in Thiago Silva but getting knocked out by James Irvin in eight seconds is pretty devastating stuff. I wish Alexander would have also been a little more gracious in defeat. Remember how he claimed Keith Jardine didn’t rock him in their fight even though that was clearly the case? Same deal last night except he didn’t end up winning this one. Anyhow, good for James Irvin. He’s scored some notable wins over the likes of Terry Martin, Doug Marshall and Scott Smith but this has to be considered the highest-profile victory of his career.

MMARated.com: From The Skating Ramp To The Cage

Never heard of Mike Budnik? Well, obviously you aren’t a fan of inline skating and don’t have an eye for up-and-coming MMA talent. The former pro skater and X games veteran recently made the jump to MMA and, boy, was that a good decision as he is currently 6-0 and on the verge of debuting for a major promotion. If you’re curious to know where he will be fighting next just check out our exclusive interview with him.

Some of the topics we discussed were:
* Why he chose to make the switch to MMA

* Comparing inline skating to MMA

* How nervous he was during his first fight

* Starting over in a new sport

* His amazing knockout of Kenny Giddens

* Fighting on a live HDNet Fights telecast

* Which MAJOR promotion has he just signed with

* Which fighter he would like to face next
